Yes the drivers are listed fine. I have tried removing the
monitors and windows just detects both of them on start up
again. I do have 2 display cards (one is built into the
moterboard) but it is disabled. The display control panel
is showing 2 monitors running on my Nvidia card which only
has 1 video out. Both are listed (the intel one is listed
as disabled). I am viewing the second monitor settings on
the same window as the first.

Thanks for all your help.

Please keep your replies to the original thread or no-one knows what you are
referring to.

Are you looking at the two monitors in the Settings tab of the Display
applet in Control Panel?  If so, the entry for Display indicates the adapter
that is driving the currently selected monitor.  Click on each monitor in
the arrangement window and hold the mouse button down for a second to
confirm which monitor you are viewing. When you click on each of the
monitors, what is the description of the Display that appears?

In Device Manager under Display Adapters how many adapters are listed and
what are their descriptions.  For the one that you believe is active, how
does the description relate to the driver that you are trying to install for
it? When you say that the on-board display adapter is disabled, do you mean
that the device is disabled in BIOS setup or do you mean that the device
driver is disabled in Device Manager?

When I click on the monitors in the display properties it
simply comes up with a big 1 or 2 depending on which
monitor I click. I don't get a description at all.

My system is listing one display adapter but as though
there 2 monitors running on the same adapter. Both
have 'Default Monitor on Nvidia GeForce2' as descriptions.

The on board card is disabled in device manager, the
drivers are uninstalled and in the BIOS under 'intergrated
devices',I have set the display adapter to 'auto'
not 'onboard'.

Hope you don't mind if I e-mail you with screenshots of
the display settings.

Thanks again for your help.

The 2 monitors if I believe correctly have nothing to do with the integrated video, you have 2 showing because of your adapter that is now installed. Instead of looking in Display properties check the Graphics settings for the adapter. IIRC the Nvidia GeForce2 supports multiple monitors.

So where does the big 1 or 2 display?  The location of the numbers indicates
the (physical) display that you have selected, so you know which one you are
dealing with.

The question has been asked several times, but we still do not have an
answer: In Device Manager under Display Adapters how many adapters are
listed and what are their descriptions.  For the one that you believe is
active, how does the description relate to the driver that you are trying to
install for it?

I am sure that the monitor I am using is monitor 1. The
1/2 just comes up on top of the monitor icon I click.

There are currently 2 adapters listed: 'NVIDIA Geforce2
MX/MX 400' and 'Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)'.
According to the device status, the Geforce 2 is working
properly. However the other is showing 'Your computer's
display driver will not work with multiple display
support'. I am guessing this is because I have uninstalled
the drivers for this card.

Thanks for the help.

If the device is listed then you have not uninstalled the drivers. Try again
to remove the adapter you aren't using (the Standard PCI adapter).  Are you
sure there isn't an adapter on the motherboard that needs to be disabled (in
BIOS, not just in device manager).

The large 1 or 2 is supposed to display on the monitor you have selected. It
is designed to enable you to identify the actual physical screen you are
adjusting - it covers nearly the whole screen, not just the icon you are
adjusting.  If you don't see it, then you are not viewing the display that's
being adjusted.
