Keith - 13 Sep 2004 03:03 GMT I basically have the same problem as a previous post. I installed a new hard drive and then installed Windows98se and ended up with only two options in my display properties. My computer is telling me that I have a video adapter and the driver for it is installed. I checked and my computer is telling me that I have the most recent driver installed. I read in the other post that you would need the following info so you would be able to help me and your help is greatly appreciated. I have the same video card as the prior post but I'm not sure if the other components make a difference. Thank You. Keith. AlmostBob - 13 Sep 2004 04:13 GMT that is quite definitely not the correct display adaptor, that is the default adaptor winodws installs when it has no idea what you have, there should be a cd containing the display drivers, or you can open the case and read the make model numbers off the display adapter card. If the display adaptor is mounted on the motherboard then the drivers should be on the motherboard cd. drivers for either should be available from the manufacturers websites, or driverguide.com

Device Description Device Type nVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 Video Adapter
Everest should report something similar.
Also, the P5A Asus motherboard you report having is a brand new motherboard since it has PCI express instead of AGP. Are you sure that's the correct number?

Joe727 - 14 Sep 2004 03:55 GMT These are the drivers for your S3 Trio 3D video card:
9x26106.zip 422k 1998 Sep 17 Binary-Trio 3D Win 95/98 MS Logo'd v. 2.61.06 -Prod
You can get them here:
http://ranger.s3graphics.com/swlib/365drv/
Create a folder on your desktop called Video Drivers.
Download the video drivers to it. Right click and extract the files to the *same folder*, or extract it using one of the free zip utilities from the PC World Magazine website:
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,6531,00.asp
**If you already have the drivers extracted in a folder you can find, then start here.**
Since the drivers do not have a self-installer so you will have to follow these installation instructions for Example 2 or Example 3:
DRIVER INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
Start the "Display" applet program.
Select the "Settings" page, push the "Change Display Type" button.
Push the "Change" button in the "Adapter Type" area.
Push the "Have Disk" button and press "OK".
Specify the path to the new driver and press the <ENTER> key:
Example 2: Type in the name of the directory where you copied the drivers, either on your local hard drive or on a network share. (***This will be the Video Drivers folder you created on your Desktop***)
Example 3: If you're not sure exactly where the drivers are, choose the "Browse..." button are find them. (***This will be the Video Drivers folder you created on your Desktop***)
The "Select Device" dialog box will appear. Select the adapter that corresponds to the one you installed in your machine and click OK.
Windows 95 (or Windows 98) will copy the display drivers to the proper directories on your system.
Continue choosing Close until asked to restart your machine from the "Systems Settings Change" dialog box.
After the system has restarted, you can go back into the Display applet and select alternate screen resolutions and color depths.
Make sure you *temporarily* disable your anti-virus program since it can interfere with the video drivers installation process. Reboot your computer.

Keith - 14 Sep 2004 05:46 GMT I downloaded the driver to a desktop folder, started the display applet program, selected the settings page and that is as far as I can go. There is no "change display type" button located on that page. All there is are two little windows, one that reads "colors" and one that reads "screen area" with an "advance" button. The only thing that says anything about display is text above the little windows that reads: Display: Princeton Ultra 72 on Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA). I tried going to the Adapter Type area and push the "change" button but it doesn't give me a "have disk" button. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks. Keith
Joe727 - 14 Sep 2004 12:43 GMT I am confused about exactly what you did. You must follow the instructions I posted because the drivers for your video card do not have a self-installer.
Did you follow the installation instructions exactly? Those instructions are in a text file that can be accessed after you "unzip" the zip file you downloaded.
Joe

Keith Keith - 14 Sep 2004 17:03 GMT I did exactly as the instructions stated. The problem I have is that when I push the settings tab in the display applet program the only button on that page is an "Advance" button no "Change Display Type" button available. When I push the "Advance" button I get another applet that has 5 more tabs: General, Adapter, Monitor, Performance and Color Management. I click on the Adapter tab and the page shows that I have a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) and also has a "change" button. When I push the "change" button it starts the " Update Device Driver Wizard". I follow through that and get to the page that shows me two choices, one that searches for a new driver and one that will allow me to select the driver from a list. I choose the select a driver from a list and I scroll to the manufacturer "S3" and in the models column it does not have my model, it has a list and in that list it has the following models that are close to what you said I have: "S3 Trio32 PCI (732)", "S3 Trio 32/64 PCI (732/764)", "S3 Trio64UV+ (767)", "S3 Trio64V+ PCI (765)", "S3 Trio64V2-DX/GX (775/785)". The model you said I have is a S3 Trio 3D video card. I'm at a stand still and I hope I explained it a little better this time. I appreciate you sticking with me through all this. Thanks again. Keith
Joe727 - 14 Sep 2004 18:06 GMT At this point you are going to have to open the PC tower and look for the exact model number of your video card. It should be printed on the video card. Take precautions to prevent static electricity discharge which can damage the components.
Or, you can look at the receipt for your PC to see if the model number of the video card is listed on it.

Keith Keith - 14 Sep 2004 19:24 GMT I opened the case and took out the video card and the following was on the large square chip in the center: S3 Trio 3D On Board NDA3BB 86C365
9847 C41219.00 Korea
On the card its self: S3 Trio 3D ver. 1.0
On the longer rectangular chip: Winbond W27C512-70 842GD281264101VE
I hope this can help. Thanks. Keith
Joe727 - 14 Sep 2004 21:10 GMT The driver I posted for your S3 video card should work without any problems. However, there is a later driver for your card which can be found here:

The installation process is the same.

Keith Keith - 14 Sep 2004 21:51 GMT Thats for the reply Brian but I got the driver Joe gave to me installed before I read your reply. Thanks Joe for all your patients and help. I don't know why I didn't download the unzipped info onto a floppy in the first place, but thats what did it. All is well on this home front. Except for my next problem of no sound. Is there a news group that I can correspond with on the sound card problem? Thanks again for everybodies help. Keith
Joe727 - 14 Sep 2004 23:08 GMT Glad to hear the video drivers are working. The sound card will be much easier since you have a Creative Labs SB PCI128 (Ensoniq ES1371) Sound Card.

Keith Keith - 15 Sep 2004 01:44 GMT You were definitely right the sound card was much easier. Thanks again. I only have one more problem that I know of and if you can help me with this I promise to leave you alone for awhile. I don't know to much about mother boards but I have a couple of USB ports that are attached. When ever I try to attach something to them they don't seem to recognize that anything is there. I tried to connect my Palm to one and Hotsync it with my computer but it won't make the connection. I also tried to hook-up a PC camera to them and it a;so says to check the connection. I shutdown the computer and restarted it to see if the computer would pick up new hardware and it doesn't. Are there drivers associated with these USB ports also or is it a totally different deal. Again if I should post this somewheres else please let me know and your help has been greatly appreciated. Thanks. Keith
Joe727 - 15 Sep 2004 02:49 GMT Do you have Windows 98 or 98SE? Windows 98 has USB support, but it's not as extensive as 98SE. You'll probably find that in your camera and Palm documentation, 98SE is required.
About 3 years ago, maybe longer, I purchased a Windows 98SE Update disk on eBay just like this one for about $25 including shipping.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41884&item=7101560181&rd=1
(DISCLAIMER - it's not my auction and I am not endorsing this auction. The link is posted strictly for informational purposes.)
They cost more now because there just aren't as many 98SE Update/Upgrade disks around. If you decide to buy a 98SE Update or Upgrade disk, ask the seller if a Product Key comes with the disk. If not, don't buy the disk. You can see the large orange sticker on the folder where the middle disk is. That's the product key.
You might want to check with a friend who has a 98SE CD but no longer uses it, because he or she now uses Windows XP.
BTW - you're not bothering me or anyone else who offers help here. That is what this newsgroup is for.

Thanks. Keith Keith - 15 Sep 2004 11:21 GMT I have 98SE installed on this computer. I had my Palm installed and working on the other computer that I just transferred everything from. I don't have the paperwork for the camera anymore, but I did have it installed and working on a computer other than these two that I have mentioned and that computer also had 98SE. I used the installation disk for both items and installed evrything before I rebooted and connected the devices to the USB ports, but no new hardware wizard appeared. What should I do at this point? Thanks. Keith.
Joe727 - 15 Sep 2004 11:26 GMT 1 - Is USB enabled in the BIOS?
2 - What chipset is on the motherboard? Everest should tell you this.

Keith - 16 Sep 2004 01:22 GMT I took a look in my BIOS and I couldn't find anywheres where it even mentioned USB. Maybe I didn't look in the right place. Could you tell me exactly where I should look and if I find it and it's not enabled how I would enable it. You also asked me what chipset is on my motherboard. I have a Asus P5A motherboard with a chipset: ALi M1541 ALaddin5. I hope this can help. Thanks Keith.
Joe727 - 16 Sep 2004 03:20 GMT Thanks for reposting the chipset model. I saw it in one of your early posts after my post re-requesting the make and model number.
Download and install the ALi M1541 IDE BusMaster (for P5A, P5A-B, P5A-VM) aliide34.zip Version v3.40 drivers from Asus.
http://www.asus.com.tw/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=P5A-B&Type=Latest
You'll probably have to reboot.
The USB Enable/Disable option in the BIOS should like something like this:

Could you tell me [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > ALi M1541 ALaddin5. > I hope this can help. Thanks Keith. Keith - 16 Sep 2004 04:58 GMT The USB was disabled in the BIOS. I enabled it and downloaded the BusMaster. When I was installing it a window popped up with the question:
DOS CD-ROM and IDE Drivers may conflict with PCI BusMaster Driver in Windows. Please remove your CDROM or IDE Driver from config.sys or autoexec.bat. Do you still wish to install the driver?
Should I click on the yes button or should I do as it says and remove the items in config.sys or autoexec.bat , with your instructions on how to do so? Thanks. Keith.
Joe727 - 16 Sep 2004 12:45 GMT First check to see if the USB devices such as your Palm Pilot and camera work. If they work, then there's no need to install the BusMaster driver.
Joe

Keith - 16 Sep 2004 22:01 GMT My USB devices do not work. I tried plugging them in while the computer was up and running and no new hardware window popped up. I unplugged them and shut down my computer and then plugged them in and still no new hardware window popped up. When I first enabled my USB in BIOS and the computer started to reboot it asked me to put my 98SE CD in which I did and it tried to look for a file on the CD but couldn't find it, that's why I figured I needed to install BusMaster. I don't recall what file it was, maybe a driver? Thanks. Keith
Joe727 - 16 Sep 2004 23:16 GMT Go ahead and install the Busmaster drivers. I am not certain, but I'd be surprised if they caused conflicts with the IDE drivers.
How often do you run the CD-ROM in DOS? Probably never, like me.
Joe

> Go ahead and install the Busmaster drivers. I am not certain, but I'd be > surprised if they caused conflicts with the IDE drivers. [quoted text clipped - 16 lines] >> BusMaster. I don't recall what file it was, maybe a driver? Thanks. >> Keith Keith - 17 Sep 2004 04:18 GMT I'm not having much luck. I installed the BusMaster and then checked to see if it was working with the USB Ready program as you suggested but the test results came back as follows: SYSTEM SOFTWARE SUPPORT Microsoft Windows 98 with Full USB support Recommendation- No System Software Upgrade Required.
SYSTEM HARDWARE SUPPORT Recommendation- No System Hardware Upgrade Required.
USB DRIVER SUPPORT USB Driver Connection Is Not Operating Correctly.
I'm not sure, do you think I did something wrong when I installed BusMaster? I went into the folder were I dowloaded it and found my way to the win9x folder and then found a file that read setupand used that for the installation. There is another file that has an icon that asks me what I want to open it with and the file is: _inst32i.ex_ In theWin9x folder there is another folder called Win9x and inside that there is three other files: Alihdd, idevsd.vxd, and M5229.mpd. I don't know if any of this helps but I'm just tring to give you as much info as possible between post.
I also went out and got a USB card from a friend and tried to install that one. Windows picked it up as new hardware but when I tried to install the driver from the 98SE CD it does the same as for the BusMaster. It cannot find the file on the disk. I tried searching the CD for the driver, but not being sure what I'm looking for I didn't see anything that would help me. Any more suggestions? Keith

I know that the name brand on the USB card that I just got is a Belkin. Thanks again for all your help. Keith
Joe727 - 17 Sep 2004 13:38 GMT IC - I didn't realize you had a separate USB PCI card installed. If it's USB1, and it appears to be, then the drivers for it are on the Windows 98SE disk. Reinstall the drivers for it through the Device Manager. Right Click My Computer on the Desktop and click Device Manager. Scroll down to USB.
If it's USB2, then you'll have to download the drivers from Belkin.
Do you have all the Windows Updates available from Windows Update?
Joe

Keith - 17 Sep 2004 21:49 GMT I have tried to reinstall the drivers through device manager a few times now and each time that I try it won't go through. When I look in Windows Update it comes up: do you want to install and run windows\temp\direct.b1. I say yes and nothing happens. When I try through the win98se CD it won't pull it off the disk.
How can I tell if the USB card that I just put in from Belkin is a USB1 or a USB2? What would happen if I downloaded the drivers from Belkin for a USB2 and I actually had a USB1? I'm really confused. Keith
Joe727 - 17 Sep 2004 23:28 GMT The box the USB card came in should tell you if it's USB 1 or USB2. You can also check the model number of the USB card on Belkin's website.
There is the possibility that you are getting an IRQ conflict (InteRrupt reQuest). On older motherboards, the AGP video card and the first PCI slot (the one right next to the AGP slot) can share the same IRQ.
Is the USB card in the slot next to the AGP video card? If so, move it to another PCI slot. If possible, leave PCI slot 1 empty.

Keith Keith - 18 Sep 2004 12:22 GMT I know it's very hard for you guys to fix a problem in this method, writing back and forth. I realize if you were sitting down in front of the computer with all the problems you could see what was actually happening instead of relying on some elses eyes and would be able to remedy the problem in a short period of time. I like this newsgroup because 99% of the time the problem that someone may have is fixed very quickly. I don't like to take the computer to anybody because I am trying to learn this stuff for when I retire in a couple of years. I did take it to a guy I work with so he could watch me and see if I was doing anything wrong aa to why we couldn't get the USB ports working. He noticed that the problem was that I was using the Upgrade CD instead of the Original 98SE CD. What he did was copy all the files to my C drive so when the computer asked for the Windows 98 disk all I had to do was to send it looking in the C drive. Maybe if someone could use a PC camera to show what they were doing with the instruction that you give, it would be much easier for you guys. I appreciate all the time and help you devoted to fixing my problem and would like to thank you very much. signed: Only Two Options in Display Properties--gone away, Keith.
Joe727 - 18 Sep 2004 13:58 GMT So, the problem has been solved? If so, that's great and thanks for letting us know it's fixed.
I use a 98SE Update disk and have no problem extracting drivers when the New Hardware Found Wizard asks for them. However, if the method your friend uses works, then that's all that counts.
As for pictures, you can upload screenshots or digital photos of what's on your monitor to your website and post links to them like I did in previous posts.
