i want to go directly to my active desktop upon powering up my
computerinstead of waiting 1-2 minutes for the windows 98 display to finally
let me to my desktop.

Any suggestions?

Don't power down. PCs do not suffer particularly from being left on all the
time.  Just make sure that the power management setting is not configured to
shut the monitor down to full power saving mode, or you will still have to
wait for the display to re-appear (although it probably wouldn't be 1-2
minutes).
