Subject: Addenda to my points on paying for disasters
Hi There,
I have to explain a few things and hope I will not create any more offense.
(Apologies if I did or do.)
(i) I never open a Website reference given by anyone, including by people in
my own family, unless some good explanations are given about what I am going
to find there. You have to accept that there are already plenty to read
before opening Websites and it is not worthwhile opening Websites for
unknown reasons. Also a summary of what is in the Website proves the
sender's goodwill towards the receiver of the
Website's address, and one obliges accordingly.
(ii) I never open a Website reference unless I know the party; unknown
parties abound on the 'Net, in particular the "generous" SPAM people.
Coming to paying towards disasters:- as I did mention yesterday, I did not
open the Website in question. One of you let me know about the contents.
What that Website contains is not really relevant in the following sense.
We are all grown-ups . Suppose you have some money and you want to invest it
somewhere. Do you go to an unknown Internet Website and invest your money
there by giving your credit card number? You don't. You either go (I mean on
foot) to a reputed bank give the money and get a receipt or you go to the
same bank , give your credit card number and invest in their Internet
service (to get a better interest ,say) and transact on the 'Net from that
day onwards. So in the matter of paying for disasters why would you not take
the same care? In Britain all banks collect for Tsunami Disaster. Of course
I went to all three of my banks (on different days and places), paid for the
Disaster Fund and GOT A RECEIPT.
So I ask you ,wise person, why would you worry about some fraudulent
dealings which are going on on the 'Net? Do your duty with as much care as
you show towards investing your OWN money when you have some to spare, and
be content! Look at the Website stories with as much doubt as you do by
going through your not-that-favourite newspaper or unreliable TV-channel.
What worries me in those scam stories is the tendency to say "I am not going
to pay anything as it will be lost in someone's pockets BEFORE leaving my
country", as the whole purpose of the scam news seems to discourage you to
pay for the disaster.
In my yesterday's letter I was talking about those who say "I am not going
to pay anything as it will be lost ON THE WAY TO or AT the disaster place,
without doing any good to the victims". It is this mentality that I was
against yesterday as I said then that a big percentage of of what you spend
for yourself is also lost. To think that way and not to pay is the ugliest
thing to do by anyone who wants to have a clear conscience towards all those
calamities sweeping the world.
Regards,
Urban.

I did not see your original post - but the reasoning that some moneys will
never get to their destination is a real posibility - me having to do with
some NGO's are just too aware that they look first after their own pockets
and disguise it as administration fees before the people who really needs
the help gets a cent.
Having said that, I have decided to put my effort for help behind a big
supermarket drive- where you donate goods ( food, utensils, blankets,
clothing) - and they will fly this out to the disaster areas on a weekly
basis in a private plane donated for this effort by a wealthy businessman.

This is fascinating but what does it have to do with support for Windows 98
display drivers and monitors? Please drop our group from your replies,
thank you.
