i downloaded a bunch of screensaver files (as .zip) files... what is the
command protocol to install/expand them properly?

You need a .zip program such as WinZip to uncompress the files.  There are
free programs available--look on the software sites or use Google search--or
you can use this shareware for a free trial:  www.winzip.com

'FREE SCREENSAVERs' are a great vector for malware delivery
scan first
upzip and install afterwards
