hi,
   On my windows98 desktop I right clicked---->display mode---->true
colors----->last option(ex..1154x800' something like that, i am not sure of
vaue but its the ast option) after doing this I am getting blank desktop with
'sync out of range"
   I did try to run in safe mode but still i got the same message "sync out
of range"
  How do i get back my normal desktop .
Thanks in advance for solution.

Just to verify what I think you said:

You used Ctrl or F8 key during startup and got the Startup Menu, then chose
Safe Mode, and the screen *still* comes up blank? Note that this is not
normal. I'd have to think long and hard about a resolution if the above is
really the case.

Just for the heck of it, go to the Startup Menu and choose Command Prompt
Only. Do you get a readable screen?
