I backed up my C: drive w/Roxio CD Creator 6. What about
my system being a FAT32? Do I first have to install
regular Win98SE and THEN change to FAT32 and THEN install
my back up ? What about my CAB Files? Will they be on my
backup or will I lose them? If not, how do I save them and
reinstall them?
I got in this mess by restoring my system from a date
prior to my virus protection and a few other programs that
were installed and this process messed up how my links
work AND registry is older than before. Anyway, BEFORE I
did this, I backed up my C drive and thought restoring IT
would be the best approach. What do you think?
How did you back up your system? Did you create an ISO standard disk using
the Create CD option in Roxio, either with track at once or subsequently
closing the CD? If so, then you have a 'standard' CD-ROM that can be copied
from DOS or Windows. The problem with copying from DOS is that you will
have to create a long filename backup of the CD files and use that to
restore long filenames after the copy. The problem with copying from
Windows is that you have to install Windows first, then do the copy, but a
lot of files will be in use so you will have to replace them from DOS
(restoring long filenames where required) after everything else gets
restored.
A simple file copy to standard CD-ROM provides a very reliable copy of your
files, but it is not the best basis for a full system restore.
If you created the CD some other way (eg, zipping the files and copying the
ZIP, MS Backup direct to CD, MS Backup to a QIC file and copying the QIC
file to CD, imaging tool, etc) then you will use a restore procedure
appropriate to the procedure you used.
Your CAB files will be on the CD if you backed them up, otherwise they
won't.
How are you going to totally clear the hard drive? If you format the drive
then you don't have to worry about partitioning or FAT or anything like
that. If you are going to remove the existing partitions then you should
re-create the partitions as FAT32, and no conversion will be required.
AFAIK restoring your system registry from an earlier version does not delete
the most recent registry backup - have you checked whether you can use
registry restore to restore to a copy more recent than the one you
originally restored to?
