when you tried to add more memory
i bet you might have loosened the haddrive ide cable

open the case and make sure all your cables are plugged in firmly

then confirm that the bios is really detecting your harddrive

I have the same problem with a HP pavillion 8595C
startup goes to disk boot failure recovery shows does not
contain FAT or valid FAT 32 partition.
SCANDISK no errors
will not start in safe mode
no new additions to the system just started.
any help or ideas would be appriciated

Boot from your startup floppy and run scandisk from it.
