Windows 98 supports disk up to 2 terabytes (2048GB).

Hi,
The only problem you can meet during the formatting process
is the 32GB barrier. This means that some BIOSES
could see the disk you are formatting as a 32GB disk.
For this reason if you are going to buy, installing and
partioning an hard disk of 200GB you have to visit before
the manufacturer site and search if there are any programs
which allow you bypassing this limit and formatting your
hard disk.
Disk Manager is one of the above programs I mentioned.
The only problem is related to the dimension of HDD and the
version of the application (disk manager. The v.10.02
supports HDD up to 137GBs hdd.
Verify on the manufacturer site i.e. maxtor, samsung if
there are any of the above aplications.

Best regards

Its a Western Digital. and they have tools to do the
formating but!!! i'm running a laptop trying to format the
HD thru a Hard Drive Kit and the datallife tools they
provide doenst read it as a drive from the USB Port.
Jeff Richards - 28 Nov 2003 21:47 GMT
You need to consult the supplier of the kit to find out the exact
requirements for hard drives that can be connected.  But if it's not
recognised at all then the problem likely has nothing to do with Windows or
the drive size.

Do you know that USB is working properly on this machine, and are you quite
sure that the disk drivers for USB are properly installed?

If you are saying the Windows sees the drive but sees it as a 120Gb drive
then you might be running into a limitation with FDISK. Exactly where are
you seeing this figure?  How has the drive been partitioned, and did you use
the latest version of FDISK?   Windows cannot use partitions over 120Gb
(which might have been your first question, except that you were referring
to drives, not partitions).

This is on a Laptop so i can only see it inside windows
(Win98se) so since I know its a 200GB I went over to my
sisters computer a Desktop and pluged the HD in there
internally and used the disk that came with the HD and
formatted it with Western Digitals Life Guard Data Tools
it was VERY FAST... didnt seem like it formatted only
wrote the table of contents or somthing so then it worked.
It was able to see 186GB so I unpluged it pluged it back
into my External HD Kit and pluged it via USB to my
sisters computer WInXP and it worked fine. then when i
take it to my laptop it did it again. says it was a
unformatted drive and asked if i wanted to format it and
only allowed me to format 131,000MB worth of it. But it
was reading/working fine on my sisters computer,
internally and externally. SO this makes me thing that
either that formatting made it in NTFS and Win98se is on
FAT32 so it doesnt read or my Bios cant handle it. I cant
find any info on my bios... still looking tho. its a
Toshiba 2595xDVD Running ACPI Flash BIOS version 8.20.

THANKS for helping Jeff,
Eric

So it now appears that Windows sees the drive and can format it as a 130Gb
drive.  I doubt that your BIOS is involved with a disk connected by USB.

Windows will not properly handle partitions over 127Gb.  If the drive has
been created with a partition larger than this then you need to re-do the
partitioning but keep each partition under about 120Gb.  A partition that
size is too large to be practical, in any case, and will waste a lot of
space.

A drive should always be formatted on the system it is going to be used
with.

Ya I guess that will be the best way to go. Suggestion on
how to format the HD into two 100GB Partitions under
Win98se FAT32 via USB? (since this is a laptop)

Thanks,
Eric

You can't use format to change the partitioning.  The partitioning must be
set up before attempting to format. Use the partitioning software provided
by the USB device manufacturer.  This should be available at their www site.

>The updated FDISK from MS supposed to be able to do it,
however after downloading and opening it, now I can not
select other drives besides just the one (1) presented.
I have an external drive that I like to partition but now
I am stuck because of the above problem.
So it appears MS fixed one problem but creates another one.
This is all I can share with you.
Jeff Richards - 30 Nov 2003 21:15 GMT
Whether or not FDISK will be able to use an external drive depends on how
the drive is connected, and specifically on how the drivers for supporting
the drive are written.  If your drivers do not allow FDISK to see the drive
then that may be because the way it is connected (eg, USB) means that it is
quite difficult to allow FDISK to see it.  In that case, the supplier will
provide a partitioning program.

Thanks a bunch guys... thanks for all your help. I got my
External Drive Kit to recgonize my 200GB HD. I partitioned
it to two 100GB Partitions. which came out to about 93GB
each partition. I still get a total of 186GB. I thought
Jeff said that with smaller partitons you lose less HD
Space. *Shrugs*

Anyways this is how i did it. I pluged it back into a
desktop and ran the virtual dos datalife disk that came
with the Western Digital HD and partitioned it into two
roughly 100GB Partitions with FAT32. it had an option of
using NTFS or FAT32 or FAT16 and one more. but default was
NTFS I had to make sure to chose FAT32. and now pluged it
into my HD Kit and via USB on my laptop and works!

THANKS AGAIN,
Eric

I've got a similar problem.  Western Digital 200G hard
drive. Booted off the WD (Data lifeguard 11 ) CD.
Partitioned the drive into 4 - 50G partitions. Used the CD
utility to dup the old 'C' and 'D' partitions off the old
drives (this allows WIN98SE to boot with all links okay
and drivers for motherboard intact). Take the old drives
off the cable and power up the computer. Bios see drive
correctly (motherboard manufacture say this MB and bios
version uses 48 LBA to access drive) Windows boots and
explorer can see the new drives, but the last drive is
reported as unformatted. Format the drive (using windows
format) and the drive size is correct and the scan disk is
good, but now the 'C' drive reports error under scan disk.
Is this a symptom that WIN98SE is wrapping when it gets
beyond 127G?
