am helpng a friend who has bought a new e-Machine, which
is loaded with windows XP Home edition. He is still using
a couple of programs which he has been running on Windows
in dos. They are out-dated and there are no programs
which will convert the files to an XP compatible program.
Would like to install his old hard drive in the new
machile as a slave and let him boot to the new or old
harddrive as necessary. I created a boot disk, but when i
type the "win" command at the dos prompt, I get a VFAT,
device not found - system halted error. Need a work-
around. Thanks

In windows XP if you right-click on a EXE file you have a compatibity option
which you can change to win98.
I think the error your getting is because the old drive in the new computer
is D: drive and the windows version on it is trying to run programs from C:
drive with is WinXP-H
Some motherboards BIOS have a setting to change the Hard-drive device list.
Mine does i use XP-Pro and if i need to run 98 i restart my computer, goto
BIOS, and change the Hard-drive device list to boot off my other dive
(Primary Slave) first.
