I have a 2-gig C drive, got a "disk full" error, deleted
nearly a gig of image files, yet the disk is still full.

Have defragged and scanned. Fat32 seems not to have
compressed the drive since then.

Depending  on how you deleted the files, they may have been moved to
the recycle bin. If that's the case, they still occupy space on your
disk until you empty the bin. So that's your next step.

I did delete them, empty recycle bin as I was trying to
recover disk space - even searched the hard drive for
those files to see if they were tucked somewhere, didn't
find them. Any hints?

Thanks much -

Why have you mentioned compression, and exactly what are you looking at when
you see the disk used space and the disk free space?

Is it possible that there is another recycle bin (such as Norton's)
installed on the machine?
