If you read this entire message, you should understand why it is
cross-posted.
I have two PC's on a network (router). #1 OS is W98; #2 has a
swappable drive bay where I put W2000 Pro OR W98 as the primary drive.
I want to be able to access the 4GB slave drive in #2 either from
W2000 or across the network from #1 (W98). When W2000 in #2 would not
recognize the slave as a formatted drive, I checked it with fdisk and
it reported the partition info as a FAv 32 ! drive (exclamation
included in info). I put the W98 drive into #2 and it read the disk
fine. So I fdisk'ed it and formatted it as a FAT32.

Everything was OK for a day until I accessed the slave files in #2
across the network using #1. All of a sudden W2000 would not recognize
the drive. Checked it with fdisk again and it reports the partition
info as "FAv 32 !"!! In case you're wondering, no I am not using
Outlook (which I understand uses files with a .fav extension) and no
email programs were run at either end of the network during this
screw-up. BTW, Windows Explorer in 98 again reports the drive is a
FAT32.

So, generally, anybody know what is going on? Have you FAT32 guys ever
heard of a FAv 32 ! format? Any takers from the networking forum? I'm
stumped and frustrated. I need to know why my slave drive in #2 is
being altered.

Dave,

Do you have a copy of Partition Magic, or if not can you even borrow
someone's boot disk of it so can you simply run it on that drive and the
important question would be what does it call that partition? ..and any
other info it will tell you.  I've never heard of FAv 32 ! ..and I'm
assuming you were reading what it said correctly..

I never heard of Partion Magic until yesterday, but I did figure it
out. I was able to corrupt the disk again within W2K on #2, which made
me realize it's not a network or W98 problem. After more searching, I
found in the MS Knowledge Base that a known bug may cause W2K to
corrupt a FAT32 boot sector, wherein chkdsk will report the partion is
RAW (which it did). A W2K program (dskprobe.exe) can copy the backup
FAT32 boot sector back on to the original sector. When viewing the
boot sector with this utility, it was all 0's (wiped clean). I
repaired the disk with dskprobe and so far, so good. BTW, I strongly
advise reading the MS KB article on dskprobe before using it!! And
your assumption was correct about reading FAv 32! when using fdisk on
that drive.

Apparently, W2K service pack 4 should prevent the problem from
recurring. Thanks to all for responding, and I hope this helps
somebody else one day.
Regards,
Dave
