FAT32 conversion-How long should it take

How long should FAT32 conversion on W98 take? What should
the computer be doing during the conversion - disk
activity?

I have checked my Bios to disable boot virus protection,
and have turned off the background programs that I feel
confident turning off (I don't have anything special
running). When I start the W98 FAT32 conversion and have
selected one of my logical drives, the screen quickly
flashes bright blue (I don't know if it is the ScanDisk
screen or another) then goes blank except for a cursor at
top left blinking. There doesn't seem to be any disk
activity (no red light indicating disk access), so after 4-
6 hours I stop it using Ctrl-Alt-Del. A window pops up
saying that FAT32 conversion was stopped before completion.

I already ran ScanDisk and Defrag on all 4 logical drives,
and I copied everything to my new 80Gb drive. Can anyone
tell me what to expect so I can complete this task? I want
to repartition after conversion.

be sure   all your data is backed up

if you repartition using fdisk...merely enable large drive support

there would be no sense in converting first as your partition(s) will be
deleted anywat!

I want bigger partitions than 2Gb; I need to convert to
FAT32 to support that. How long does the conversion
normally take and what should the computer be doing while
it is converting?

How long will depend on the speed of the processor, the speed of the
disk, and how much data is on the partition being converted.

The computer should be doing as little (besides the conversion) as
possible. It should be doing NOTHING that might write to the partition
being converted.

Thanks for the info. Each partition is just about full
(about 1.7-1.9 Gb) and I have copied everything to a
bigger drive. My processor is an AMD K6 @ 400MHz. Would
you suggest to delete the info from each partition before
I convert since I have copies, and then would I expect a
couple of hours or close to 8 hours?

Note that converting partitions with the W98 conversion utility will not
change the partition size.  If you are doing this so that you can combine
partitions or have partitions larger than 2Gb, then there's no point in
converting.  Either back up everything, delete the existing partitions, and
re-create them as FAT32, or use a third-party utility like Partition Magic
to convert and combine.

You've done a great job of explaining that part, so I have
a third-party application to take care of the partition
size. I need to convert before I change the size as per
Partition Resizer. How long should I expect the conversion
to take and should I see any disk activity?

It's very difficult to estimate the time to convert, as Tim has mentioned,
but I think it's clear that your conversion is not running. You should be
able to detect disk activity.

Run Scandisk again to confirm there aren't any errors in the file system,
and do another defrag so that the conversion is as simple as possible. If
it's not fragged it will only take a moment.

Partition Magic has its own conversion procedure, so the problem would
disappear if that's what you were using.  With Partition Resizer you have to
get the MS one to work.  There might be an error message you can't see.

Thanks so much - that gives me a better idea. I will try
the Scan and Defrag and I'll let you know. Should I clear
the contents before converting?

As I said before...
if you have all your data backed up there is no sense in converting...
merely run fdisk and enable large drive support
then delete everything.
run fdisk again and create your partition(s)

reboot and format the drive

Philo,
My understanding is that W98 won't support large drive
partitions unless it is set up as FAT32. If I run Fdisk,
and specify large drive does that automatically determine
FAT32?

Yes, it does.
