hi,
There was a problem with win98 and the system was giving
me a missing dll file error message. I created a startup
disk on a diff 98 machine and booted the machine on a:
and did a fdisk of the hdd without formatting the hdd. I
however, did format the disk later on after on but now it
shows a capacity of 9782.2MB free and the capacity of the
hdd is 8 gb..and i have got a win98se cd and used the
format option from there..
while using the fdisk, i first deleted the primary
partition and also extended partitions..now while booting
the system on win98se cd I select install windows 98 and
the system runs a scandisk and during the second option
it gives a msg saying 'Fat on this drive does not match'
and i say fix it and it says fixed and goes to the next
one which is directory structure and here I continuosly
get error messages like 'C/Dir00001 file or directory is
damaged and is currently unusable' and click on fix it
and then there is another file waiting to be fixed..and
there are loads of directories now on my formatted
c:..guess the prob began when I did a fdisk without
formatting the drive. Please let me know what do I do now
and how can i get my system up and running..thanks a
ton.hopefully I get an email to my above address..thanks
a ton..

You should be able to leave a partition unformatted without any long term
effects.
Don't know why you haven't tried removing the partition, recreating
partition and formatting with same startup diskette.
If this doesn't work, I would suspect I/O problems.

There is no point in installing Windows if Scandisk is reporting errors. You
should start over with FDISK by deleting all partitions and creating them
from new. Then format the drive, and run Scandisk to confirm it's operating
OK.  You should also run hard disk drive diagnostics available at the www
site of the disk drive manufacturer.  When Scandisk and the diagnostics
report everything OK you can install Windows.
