How would I us the Copy Commend in DOS to copy a 3 1/2
floppy to a folder on my harddrive? "Doing this in DOS
not win"

Thank You

Assuming there are no folders on the floppy then at a C:> prompt type

Copy a:/*.* c:/folder/*.*

folder is the name of the folder you want to copy too.

Note: If any of the files on the floppy does not adhere to the 8.3 dos file
format you may have problems.

You'd need to use a backslash instead of a forward slash, so the
command would look like this:

copy a:\*.* c:\folder\*.*

I think that this would work only for the root directory of the
floppy. If there were files in subdirectories this command would not
copy them. The xcopy command has a flag (/s, that's a forward slash
this time) that causes it to recurse through subdirectories.

Now I get:
"The system cannot find the path specified"
so I just typed "A:" and then I get
"Data error <cyclic redundancy check>

OK, here's the command:

copy a:\*.* c:\folder\*.*

This assumes that there is a directory on your C: disk named "folder".
If that's not true, you'll get the "cannot find the path specified"
error.

As to your other error, it makes no sense. Typing "A:" at the command
line should just take you to the a: drive. You should see a prompt
like "a:> ". "Cyclic redundancy check" sounds like a zip utility was
trying to process a corupted zip file.

It seems like the floppy disk or the floppy disk drive is faulty. Have you
tried the disk in another machine to confirm that the disk is OK?  You
haven't mentioned how you got to DOS (it does make a difference) but if
Windows sees the disk as unformatted then it's likely that DOS commands will
not be able to access the disk.  Your best chance for getting access to the
disk might be to boot to command prompt only (press and hold Ctrl before
Windows starts, and you will get a boot menu). Then you can examine the disk
with commands like
DIR A:
to see the contents of the disk.  If you get an error message then you need
to consider floppy disk data recovery software - search the www using those
terms and you will see free software, evaluation software (when it indicates
it can see and recover the data, you pay your money to get the full version)
and professional recovery services (depending on how valuable that data is).

If you get similar errors attempting to access the disk on a number of
different machines then there's not much doubt that the disk is faulty. You
need to investigate the data recovery options I mentioned.

Do NOT format the disk. In fact, you should double check that the
write-protect tab is set, and you should not write anything to the disk at
all.  Whether or not data can be recovered from the disk depends entirely on
the level and type of damage that has occurred.
