Lost C: after a cold boot ?

Hello All,
REcently I was having problems like freezing, rebooting
suddenly, without warning, without any cause. Today also
same thing happened. The screen went blank, the monitor
light was flickering. Keyboard, mouse did not respond. So
did a direct shut down. But now windows didnot start.
After bios routine, it just said 'loading windows' and
stopped there. The engineer came and said C: is lost, got
to format and do it over again. He showed me that fdisk
says the file system on c: is labelled as 'Unknown'
instead of FAT32.
Is there any way out ?
Thanks..

If the disk drive is faulty you need to repair it first. You can get hard
disk drive diagnostics from the www site of the drive manufacturer. You can
check that the cabling and connectors are OK, and confirm that it is
correctly recognised in BIOS setup.  If it's repairable, or if the fault was
only temporary then the information may be recoverable, although you'll need
some help. Use Findpart from this site to get partition information.
http://www.partitionsupport.com/utilities.htm

Be very careful that you do not write anything to the disk until you are
sure that it is operating properly, as that will simply make things worse.

It seems as the FAT of the primary FAT32 partition in the beginning of
the disk may be OK, but the boot sector and the backup boot sector are
damaged.

If you have somewhat more than 3973 MB free in one partition on disk
1, you can do using Findpart for Windows in an empty directory:

findpart chsdir 2 0 1 33 15266 4 2 copy

to attempt to copy all files from the partition.

It will be possible to repair the partition if only the boot sectors
are damaged.

Remember to run the copy command in an empty directory, to avoid
conflict with existing files and directories.

Hello Svend,
I tried as you advised ..
I ran the command-
findpart chsdir 2 0 1 33 15266 4 2 copy
In the first hdd but it gave the Helpfile as the output,
nothing happened.
Also can I run the command on an undamaged partition of
the 2nd HDD, if so do i have to change the disk number ?
Thanks, Waiting for your reply.

Did you use Findpart for Windows, version 4.41?

You can have the Findpart files in the directory in which you run the
command.

The command is the same if run from a partition on another disk. I
mentioned disk 1, since it did not seem as you have room for all files
in an OK partition on disk 2.

You are God Svend Olaf !
I successfully copied the data to new partition. I am not
a computer professional I am a Doctor, a Pathologist But
ur instructions and program were so immaculate that I was
able to do it.
If you ever visit India, be my guest. I will write a
personal email to you, if you dont mind..

Nice that you could copy the data.

Feel free to email me.

But please do not overestimate how complicated this was to solve. Any,
or almost any recovery program which copies data to another disk could
have been used.

You can do:

findpart tables fp-a.txt

and mail me the file fp-a.txt. Then I will look into the possibility
of a repair.

The very fact that you bothered to reply is indeed worthy of the praise you
