I have just fitted a 160GB Hitachi Deskstar to my computer to replace a
faulty 80GB Seagate drive running Win XP. When I boot up I get the message
Primary Drive not found.
I have a Gygabyte GA-7VRXP mother board ver 2 and am using the latest bios
version for that board. I started of with the jumpers on the factory setting
for 16 logical heads and then tried  the alternative 15 setting. I have now
attached my old 8 GB Fujitsu HD (Win98SE) as a slave drive and altered the
jumper settings for that. I have also tried the cable select jumper setting.
Since fitting the slave drive it is always found at boot up as the secondary
drive but the system boots from it. Previously I could change my BIOS
settings from 0 to 1 to select the drive I wanted to boot from. The 0 option
is still there but I cannot get the 1 option now.
Have I got a faulty drive or am I missing something? Naturally I bought the
drive by mail order, (Scan International UK)  so if it is faulty it becomes
hassle and costs to send it back.

You have to partition and then format the drive.  If it is the only drive,
fdisk will set it as the active (boot) drive.

FDISK said that there was no drive there.

First, pull the old drive and leave it out until things are squared away.
Make sure the jumper pin setting is correct on the new drive.  Watch the
boot screen and click the key indicated to enter setup (the BIOS).  Make
sure the new drive is detected in the BIOS.  Then run fdisk again.

I have tried all that and BIOS never gives any message other than primary
drive not found. The drive is now on it's way back.
My MB maker confirmed that the board and BIOS accept 160GB drives.

Even though retail hard drives cost more locally, such is the reason I buy
locally.
