Hi,

I have simple NetBEUI networking and TCP/IP installed on my laptop.

Some weeks back I added TCP/IP to my Ehternet adaptor, and internet sharing to
my desktop, so I could surf from on my laptop through my desktopn connection.

My Network properties look like this:

Client for Microsoft Networks.

Dialup Adapter
Intel 8255x-based PCI Ethnert Adapter (10/100)
NETGEAR WG511 54mbps Wireless PC Card
Toshiba FIR Port Type-O

NetBEUI -> the Ethernet Adapter
TCP/IP  -> all three

File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

All settings are to automatic detection.

My LAN connection settings in Internet Options are to automatic detection.

All went well until my browser couldn't find the "server or dns". This has
continued for weeks despite my attempts to fix it.

The browser connects OK, but then lossed the DNS server after 5 or 10 minutes.

It happens on any connection, dial-up, various wireless broadcast, my internet
sharing networking.

It happens with any browser, MSIE, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera.

It never fails. The browser connection never returns.  Sometimes it chokes for a
while  before I get the error message, usually not.

It does not happen with email, ftp, telnet etc.. They remain uneffected.

Winipcfg retains the correct network information, which I renew before surfing,
even though the browser returns dns errors.

Restarting network connection does not help.

Removing NetBEUI or other protocals and adopters does not help.

Not logging onto network doesn't help.

Setting the TCP/IP binding in use as default protocal doesn't help.

Renewing the IP configuration doesn't help.

Logging off and on doesn't help.

The only thing that works is a reboot.

I can't undo it! I uninstalled all networking, including dial-up, reinstalled
win98se, reinstalled Netgear wireless only, took it to a cafe to test.  Still
had the problem.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

I have had some similar issues.
First, make sure the default gateway on the laptop points to the deskptop's
IP address (easier to do if they are static IPs vs. DHCP IPs). Right-click on
NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD, then click PROPERTIES. Select the TCP/IP entry for your
network adapter (the one connecting to the desktop) and click PROPERTIES.
Second, find out what the DNS server is for your dial-up connection. On the
desktop after connecting to the internet, go to START - RUN. Type "command"
(no quotes). In the MS-DOS window, type "ipconfig /all" (no quotes). You
should see your ICS adapter, Dial-up adapter, network adapter and some
others.  One of the entries should show an IP address for a DNS server. Enter
this on the laptop in the DNS tab.

Anymore than that is outside the scope of what I encountered.

Thanx.

I finally got it.

I ran Wintop, a kernal toy, to see if there were any programs starting after I
had been logged on for a few minutes. Sure enough, a program in the system file,
that says it is a microsoft file, called Pstore.exe would start and my browser
connection would be lost.  I deleted it and its rc file.  No more problems.

You deleted pstore.exe?  Bad move.  That file controls protected storage,
the saving of passwords, usernames etc.

If you suddenly discover that your system is unable to save or retrieve
passwords, if Outlook Express suddenly runs very slowly or if the Windows
AddressBook won't or is very slow to open, the reason is the deletion of
that file.

If you are using OE, then your problems could quite likely have been caused
by the user setting 'disconnect after send receive'.

Further assistance regarding the possible cause of your original problem can
be found here:

Computer keeps disconnecting:

Internet connection freezes (data going to and from modem seems to pause):

I did delete pstore.exe and its data files and they are still gone.

I have not had any of the problems that youn expect (yet:-)

I have been using Thunderbird, not OE, for most of the period in question.

Is it possible OE was connecting in the background without showing up on Wintop?

Is it possible I stopped it by deleting pstore.exe?

I absolutely had tried everything, including all the configurations on the pages
you reference (thank you I saved the suggested settings just in case) except the
disconnection setting in OE.

I deleted pstore because it appeared in wintop exactly when I lost connections
through network, modem or wireless, on 3 or 4 trials.  I have been able to
maintain connections without exception immediatly thereafter and ever since.

Could pstore.exe have been corrutpted, rewritten or replaced by a spybot?

Hadron,

Consider this.  You probably had a corrupt password, which is completely
different from problems with pstore.exe.  In short, you used a sledgehammer
to squash a flea.
