I've resuscitated an old Win98SE PC and after upgrading to IE6, got fully
updated on Windows Update (except .NET Framework which causes the PC to
crash).
The problem is that browsing a large number of sites causes IE6 to crash
showing the following message:
This program has caused an illegal operation and will be shut down.
Hitting Details reveals:
EXPLORER executed an invalid instruction in module FLASH9D.OCX at
0167:30051438
Is there any way I can prevent this?

I don't know of a solution for IE6. I'd un-install Flash from IE6 and
use Firefox to view sites that require Flash.

You could try uninstalling all Flash from your system using the uninstaller linked
below, then reinstall Flash 9d, reboot, and test.
If no joy, use the uninstaller again and install Flash 8, as described below.
Uninstall Flash Player 9 and any other versions that may be present:
How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2
Reboot.
Browse and see if you get any crashes.
If not, download and install Flash Player 8 from here:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266&sliceId=2
Reboot.
Go here, download and install the update listed for Flash Player 8:
http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html#fp8
Reboot, and test.
Or, use Flash 9d in a different browser, as Steve suggests
