i was just given a compaq pentium 3 pc running win98se.
when i try to connect to the internet with my cable
modem, i get no connection using either the usb or
ethernet cables. i inserted the disk from the modem, and
the wizard, during the system requirements search, tells
me that neither a usb nor ethernet outlet is found, but
this is absurd, as both are clearly there on the back of
the pc.  i know the modem works, as i've been using it
with my pentium 2 running winme [with which i've been
having other problems...]

thanks!!!

Open control panel and go to the system icon.

Open device manager and check that your Ethernet card is working and that
your USB is working.

As an example some motherboard bioses didi not enable usb as default.

>Jon you are right about that. I lost the internet when I
reinstalled windows. I tried to install my modem and
Device manager kept saying it was either not present or
drivers wern't installed. It did show my Com. ports as
being OK. I finally removed all three ports from the
sys.with device mananger then rebooted.Windows found all
three ports and installed them. I then shut down, plugged
in my modem and restarted.windows found it (plug and play)
and installed it. Also it would auto load my disc. I had
to install the drivers by browsing with the add new
hardware tool. What is the glitch? Thanks,Bob.
