I was told by a to update my Windows 98 second edition
with the new updates which I did.  (I can't afford XP)
Now, I get the message that I have no modem!  The Dell
folks told me that of course I need a new modem!! I
should have known that!!

Can I uninstall the updates?  I don't want to buy and pay
for installation of a new modem!

Thanks.

Never, never, never ever, never ever use MS windows update for any hardware
driver.

True NEVER get any of their updates for Hardware! They
say they have tow for mine but they are older that what
they came with.

I would only get the Critical Updates ONLY. Updates for
DirectX or Windows Media from their sites only, not the
Windows Update site.

You shouldn't need a new modem but will in my opinion
need to format the drive and install everything from
scratch.

Nope. If the problem was cause by a window driver update, MS Support may fix
it for free.  Requires your PC be viewed remotely by an MS tech.  That's
what they said.  I've experienced this, same scenario.  Sound card was
misinterpreted as a modem, and the update destroyed operability of the sound
card as a consequence.  They succeeded in removing the upgrade, but the
modem remained inop.  Had to remove and reinstall the original modem driver
software.  Painful, but easier than a complete clean install.
