I have a PC which has an internal modem which has worked perfectly with WIN95
and WIN98. I have resinstalled WIN98SE by formatting and installing from WIN
98 SE distribution disk. On restart, plug and play detected and installed all
hardware. Make 'New connection' searches for and doesn't detect modem on COM
ports. Unfortunately I can't remember the model/make of modem to install via
list. Examing the device list (Control Panel, System) shows that COM ports
are installed and OK, but PCI Bus reports driver not installed - is this the
cause of the problem ?)
As a solution, I propose to purchase an external modem - is this a viable
solution ?

If you have no way to discover what the make and model of the modem are (and
yes, that modem with no drivers is almost surely the unknown device on the
PCI Bus) then purchasing an external modem would solve the problem since it
would come with the necessary drivers.
You could also try shutting down the computer, removing the modem and
looking for a manufacturer's name, part number or FCC ID and searching for
the modem's type with this information.

Thats what I thought. i have subsequently read in the knowledge base that it
may be listed under other devices. also I have found a diskette ! marked PCI
Bus this is presumably the drivers. Once updated/installed then I'm hoping
that it'll detect the modem. If it doesn't work I'll buy an external one -
only £20 (safer than me opening up and exploring).
Thanks for your help

Thanks,
I've determined the device using the 'how to Registry Editor to identify an
unknown device" - but I will look at the other sites ( and bookmark them ) as
well for fiurther info.
