Win-Modem install -- Need experienced help !

Since the middle of April I've been struggling to get this homebuild
straightened out. Finally got the DVD writer back, and fought to get a
Sterling S20 softmodem working.

The modem works, sort of. But it will only connect *when the receiver is
off the hook* and usually only offers 24000 bps. Very slow, and with
lots of restarts (you can hear the modem negotiating a re-connect).

WHY this condition is, I don't know, but I suspect driver/IRQ problems.
Win98se plug&pray lists it *twice* in Device Mgr -- under "Modem" and
"HSF Modem -- and each one has assigned resources. MSInfo32 shows no
conflicts, but there's no driver installed for "PCI System Management
Bus," and it's a PCI softmodem.

Now that My Computer sees the DVD rewriter again, I can install better
drivers if I can find 'em. But I'm really trying to get a stable, fast
dialup connection so I can at least look for help online.

If you can offer any help, TIA very much.  I'll read here and post back.

Is the modem able to draw a dialtone on its own?

I think the SMbus is a separate "device":
http://www.interfacebus.com/Design_Connector_Smbus.html

In any case I don't believe it is supported by Win98, but I'm not sure
about this.

Conexant provides generic HSF drivers here:

Otherwise this appears to be Sterling's support page:

Thanks for responding, Frank.  The Sterling S20 doesn't have a speaker.
At least it never makes a sound, so I've never heard a dialtone from it.

Be my guest. I can find it, but I can't really understand it.  I've
saved a few others after testing alternate settings, and can post those,
too.

Heh...Been there and saved some of this material already, but it's
confusing.  I was hoping you or someone has answers that will lead me
out of the maze I'm wandering in.

I looked for Hyperterminal on my system and didn't find it.  Haven't
checked the Update disk yet, but I will.

I'll check that out.

My motherboard (MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum) has a slew of built-in devices.
It could be a real dream, but I'm far from being on top of this system.
The motherboard installation disk is within 8 feet of me; so is
everything else I've lost. ; )

Been to both these sites and downloaded from one. The other download was
large enough that I wasn't going to try it on a slow connection until I
could babysit the modem.

I've seen your posts since I began researching this modem's problems
(when I could finally access NGs again), and I'm grateful you responded.

Thanks,
JPM
