When installing a new internal 56k modem, after
successful installation of driver files, the PCI Modem
Enumerator within Control Panel/System/Devices shows a
yellow exclamation point next to the PCI Modem
Enumerator, and the following message under
Properties: "The NTKERN.VXD, CONFIGMG.VXD device loader
(s) could not load the device driver, (Code 2)  To fix
this, click Update Driver to update the device driver.

Needless to say, I have "updated" the device driver
multiple times.  I have also read the article about the
USB system drivers, re-extracted the *.sys files from CD
and reinstalled the modem drivers, but receive the same
message as above.

Outside of buying another modem (this one is a 56k
internal HiVal), are there other possible solutions to
this problem?  Thanks in advance for any information you
may provide.

HI there,
It could be that the hardware is not setup properly. You can try to go to
safe mode and check in the device manager, if multiple entries of the modem
are listed. If yes then delete all the entries and restart in normal mode
and see if the modem gets detected and gets installed.Check in device
manager. If still it shows code 2 then try to change the pci slot in which
the modem is fixed (after removing the device from the device manager and
then shutting down the computer). If still does not help then the modem might
be bad, and get is replaced.Good luck,
Shane Connor
