I have not found a thing on "modem" problems here, so i
am posting with the hopes someone has an answer.
I think mine fried. We had a real bad lightening storm,i
disconnected all the electricity, unplugged it all, but
forgot the telephone wire..Next day I came on and modem
said <i have aol> "Modem reported no dial tone" and when
i tried again, it said "Modem can not initialized call" I
hooked my phone to the line and it worked and when i put
my husbands computer on that line, it worked.. so i came
to the conclusion it had to be the modem.. I took it out,
and bought one at walmart today.. I had a 56K, MSP 5900-U
Com4 in my window 98 compute. The one i bought is a US
Robotic, 56K,Faxmodem, PCI for Windows.Includes V.92 and
V.90 ITU, standard technology.. CAN I USE IT??I am a
senior and have no idea..
thanks
please help

When in doubt, install it according to the manufacturer's instructions and
see what happens.

Hey!
No problem u can go ahead and use the US robotics
modem............As far i understood u have an Aol
connection.....................so it will work fine....
Make sure u install the drivers of the
new modem.......
and then detect the modem.....I will tell u how to
do that....
         1.    on the sign on screen of Aol....click on
the tab: setup.
         2.   Then click on: Expert setup.
         3.   Then click on: Devices(modem etc..)
         4.   Then click on: Auto Detect
Then u have to wait........ the software would
automatically detect the modem.........and give u some
options.............u need to select: Modem (telephone
line connection).
Then go ahead and click next....finally
u get the sign on screen go ahead and sign on u would be
able to do that............
                           Thats it pretty simple.....
                Byeee ..Take Care........
