I cannot figure out what is wrong, windows98 se will not
open, not from normal boot, not in safe mode. I can get my
A: and C: prompts and I can open directories one after the
other, I can even open an Edit window, and run ScanDisk.
But as far as anything else goes, nothing works. Format,
Fdisk, cannot get help files to open. I have tried
reinstalling windows but all that proceeded to do was to
give me the dreaded blue window of death (a fatal
exception....oE xxxx:xxxx in vxd ios(o4)+xxxx) Bought
progams boasting to run, even if hard disk were
unavailable, (I can open the directories), and the
response is "Cannot run in MS-Dos". Ok, so let's format,
fdisk, reinstall, and nothing is resposive. Virus scans
say all is OK, but everytime I run ScanDisk more clusters
are reported to be corrupted or damaged. My beep codes are
normal, all my BIOS are properly configured, and if I were
not crazy to begin with, I soon will be. Any suggestions
would be GREATLY appreciated. If it were not for my
sister, and her computer being so readily at hand, (and I
am sure she would like to have it back,) I would not even
be able to get this far.

you should get a harddrive diagnostice utility and give the drive a test...
it sounds like it is bad
however as a good precaution it would not hurt to also run a RAM test

Thank You for your input, I have tried everything else
that I could find in all of the data bases, newsgroups,
etc. that I could find, the hard drive diagnostic I just
bought, but since computer just sits there I will try the
RAM test.... Now just one more thing, what is a RAM test
and how would I go about such a procedure?

Either you take the ram to computer shop and have it tested or you put
it in a PC that is working and run a software test: DocMemory,
freeware: http://www.simmtester.com/page/products/doc/download.asp
To test the hard drive, determine the brand of the drive, go to the
maker's web site, download the diagnostic software and run it (runs from
a floppy).
