I want to thank Richard Harper for the answer to my
question.  I spent a long time trying to figure out a way
to do this, and since it is impossible, I couldn't.

I also tried to run the backup program to the computer.  I
got the message that the file was too big and that I
should split the data.  Is there a guideline for doing
this?  I also would like to know why it makes sense to
backup to the hard drive as the backup is to protect
against harddrive failure.  If the hard drive fails,
wouldn't the backup also be useless?

Microsoft Backup is a very outdated program.  You should consider a more
modern alternative, like an inexpensive second hard drive and a hard drive
imaging program like Ghost, DriveImage or Image from
http://www.bootitng.com/ instead.
