WMP 7.1, Registry error/Format Tab & no digital - Related?

After a few installs & uninstalls of WMP 7.1, a small
window still appears when I try to open the options format
tab that says "Registry Error" (with no error code #).
Close the error window and the tab opens with no file
extensions to select. There is nothing where the files
should be listed.
Player also will not read digital from CD.  I understand
that could be my drive, or is there a possible registry
problem causing the digital issue?  Nortons says my
registry is fine.  All worked fine a few days ago. I've
tried a fresh download of WMP. I'm not convinced WMP is
completely uninstalling with Add/Remove because the new
install does not open in "Media" which I understand is the
default and some of my previous preference selections also
appear and not the defaults. I've ran 3 different
companies virus scans. Any thoughts?
