I am having trouble figuring this problem out?  The
problem is this specifically: The sound card appears to be
working, as well as the speakers, but there is no sound
coming from the speakers or the sound card.  Does that
mean that the card is toast?

hello!
Did u try connecting  head-phones and playing songs from
ur sound card.
And if u have played from ur cd see if the connector from
the cd rom or writer is connected to ur sound card
appropriately.
or check to see if the volume control somewhere in the os
is muted.(believe me, this happened to me more than once
;-))
