I have an old Gateway with Windows 98.  It came with a DVD
drive and player.  I recently had to completely reboot my
system with the restoration CD.  In the process I lost my
DVD player.

RealPlayer does not work, and suggests installing free
WinDVD.  Where can I find this or any other free DVD
player?

Thanks

Jim

Why does Maro keep repeating what other people say while giving no
answer to their questions?  Is it a technical or some other problem?

Jim, I would go to the website of the maker of the DVD drive and,
using the model number if necessary, download the software again.  It
will be free.

When you say reboot your system, do you mean you, or the restoration
CD, reformatted the harddrive, erasing everything, and reinstalled
windows?  That's called something other than "rebooting". (People
(completely) reboot every time they turn the computer on after having
turned it off.)

Or does the restoration CD do something less than that, like reinstall
Windows without erasing everything (I don't know what is done.  I only
have a tiny bit of experience with HP on something like this, and with
HP, I didn't have an entry number and I never finished.)  Have you
looked through all the directories (folders).  If you find any of your
own data files, files you by necessity created after you got the
computer, or even a prior owner's data files, if it left any of these,
it probably left everything and just reloaded Windows.  Maybe you have
the software already there and just need to set up an Association or
otherwise relink the software to your hardware.

When you go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager, is your dvd
player listed there?  Does it have a yellow exclamation mark?  Or is
it listed as ok?  Even with a yellow mark, it may say the brand and
model number of you dvd player, so you won't have to use the model on
the faceplate or open the computer to see the model number on the
bottom, top, or back of it.
