I have an ESS1688 AudioDrive installed in my Compaq LTE
5300 Laptop. I am unable to hear any sounds. I can hear
the following sounds: system beeps. I know that these
sounds do not come from the sound card, but the system
speaker. However, when I play MS-DOS based games using the
SET BLASTER command in the Autoexec.bat file, the sound
does work. The only time the sounds do not work is within
Windows. I think that the Operating System is to blame.

Hi,

You can fix the problem by  installing the audio driver from the following

Hi Patrick,
I've had exactly the same problem with my LTE 5280. Here's how i
solved it:
Firstly, it's important to understand that the standard windows
drivers for the ESS1688 DO NOT WORK. Go to Device Manager, select the
faulty sound icon and remove/uninstall it. Next open up windows
explorer, and locate the drivers in the Windows directory (mine had 4
files - ESS1688.drv, ESS1688.vxd and a couple of others). Replace them
with the files that compaq supply (found on the softpaq disk - see
R.S.Manikandan's reply). Reboot. Windows should find the new hardware
on startup and re-install the drivers - make sure it uses the compaq
drivers and not the windows drivers. You should then get the funky
volume icon in your system tray.

Final note: After doing this i had full stereo sound and could play
midi files ok, but the wave sounds stuttered badly. Solution - reflash
the bios (see the compaq lte5000 series driver download site) and set
to factory defaults. This solved the rest of my sound card problems.

Hope all this helps.

Double click the yellow speaker in the systray and see if anything is
muted.

I forgot to see if there were answers before I answered.  I seem to
often do that.  Silly me.
