I have Windows 98 SE and my computer used to have no
speakers on it. So I bought some 2.1 audio speakers
(Altec Lansing) and I plugged them and there is no audio
at all. I am using the motherboard sound card. Any
suggestions?

Hi,

You may experience difficulties with the computer's volume due to various
reasons.  To resolve the issue, check if the sound problem is caused by
faulty hardware or if it is a software issue.

Hardware Troubleshooting Steps:

Test the speakers with a different audio source to check if the speaker is
working.  You can use a walkman, portable stereo, or a television headphone
jack and check the sound from the speaker.  If the speakers are not
functioning properly, ensure the following:

1.  The cables are connected properly to the speaker.
2.  The signal cable runs from the "line out" on the sound card to the
input jack on the back of the speaker.  If "line out" is not
   there, use "speaker out."
3.  The speakers are turned on.
4.  The volume settings in Windows are set to 25% and not muted.
5.  Check the connection to the wall outlet.  Most speakers and
subwoofers have an indicator light confirming that there is
power when they are turned on.
6.  If there are no problems with the speakers and the connections are
correct, check the volume settings by following these steps:

    a.  Click Start, select Programs, and choose Accessories.
    b.  Click Entertainment.
    c.  Click Volume Control.
    d.  Make sure the slide bar for CD-Audio is not set to minimum.

If the computer hardware is working correctly, please perform the following
software troubleshooting steps in order.

Software Troubleshooting Steps:

If the volume settings are correct, you may have to reinstall the audio
drivers by following these steps:

1.  Right-click the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
2.  Click Properties and select the Device Manager tab.
3.  Double-click "Sound, video, and game controllers."
4.  Highlight each device and click the Remove button.
5.  Click OK to confirm removal of the device.
6.  Repeat this process until all the devices are removed.
7.  Click Close at the System Properties box.
8.  Restart the system.

When Windows restarts, it should detect and reinstall the sound drivers.

If you still experience difficulties with the computer's volume, remove and
reinstall Windows Multimedia through Windows setup.  To remove Multimedia,
follow these steps:

1.  Click Start, select Settings, and choose Control Panel.
2.  In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3.  Select the Windows Setup tab.
4.  Locate Multimedia and deselect it.  This will remove all the
   Multimedia components in your computer.
5.  Restart the computer.

To reinstall Windows Multimedia, follow these steps:

1.  Click Start, select Settings, and choose Control Panel.
2.  In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3.  Select the Windows Setup tab.
4.  Select the Multimedia check box.
5.  Click OK.

If the system continues to operate without any sound, check the device in
Multimedia or install the device manually.  To install the device manually,
follow these steps:

1.  Click Start, select Settings, and choose Control Panel.
2.  Double-click the Multimedia icon.
3.  Select the Devices tab and click the plus (+) sign next to Media
   Control Devices.
4.  Double-click the Wave Audio Device and click the Remove button.
5.  Click OK to confirm the removal.
6.  Click OK to close the Multimedia box.
7.  Double-click the Add New Hardware icon.
8.  Click Next and select "No I will select the hardware" option.
9.  Click Next.  This will bring up a list of hardware devices.
10.  Click "Sound, video, and game controllers" and click Next.
Windows will build a driver information database.  Next, you will
see a list of Manufacturers and a list of Models.
11.  Under Manufacturers, select "Microsoft MCI".  Under Models,
    select "Wave audio device."
12.  Click Next and then click Finish.
13.  Close the Control Panel and restart the computer.

This will install the audio device in your computer.
