Whenever I boot up, the volume control of Line-In always
has the mute box checked.  Is there a registry entry or
some other means whereby the Line-In volume is NOT
defaulted to mute?

Hi,

This issue can be fixed by installing the latest audio driver, I recommend
you contact the manufacture to install the latest audio driver.

P&M  If replying, please reply by post.

I have a lot of things that revert to the way they were in the
previous session, before they were changed.  The volume for "CD" is
the most recent of these, which I only noticed for sure after I read
your post  It was not muted for years, but now it keeps starting that
way.  Unfortunately, I do have the last set of drivers.

Last week, it was Zone Alarm, which for 18 months had always started
locked, no matter how many times I unlocked it, even if I exitted
normally from Windows. (Even if I did almost nothing else but unlock
it after I started windows and before I exitted) .  I had to delete
the iam.db file (or something with a similar name) and start over
building the list of authorized programs.  What was strange is that
the file I deleted also had my list of authorized programs and I never
had any trouble updating that or retaining any settings regarding
them.

Also had trouble with which programs started at startup, as set in
msconfig.exe.  I solved that by I) a) Starting windows (98FE), b)
doing nothing but changing the startup programs, c) exitting windows.
II) also by learning to change things directly, by learning the
various locations where startup programs started, and changing things
there.  That worked, and it's what you're trying to do.

There were other examples but I forget them, although iirc they are
not all solved..

BTW, it may not be any help to you, or it may, by using RegGenie** of
Cleansweep 4.1, I was able to find 6 occurrences of LineMute.    I had
to mute my line-in to see if it would show your problem, but even
after doing that, all values were 00 00 00 00.  Not sure why.  When I
start to edit the value it is 0000  00 00 00 00.  Don't know what the
value would be if it were muted!!!!

There are several parallel groups of XxxxMute, but strangely, none of
them include CDMute, the one I have the problem with (I think there
is, in code. See below).  There is 3D_Mute, AUX3Mute, MicMute,
AuxMute, SynthMute, WavMute, LineMute, SoftwareWTMute and Muted^^.

These are within
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\MEDIA\0001\Config\

And also where 0001 gets changed to 0007, 0011, 0016, or 0020. ***

^^These sure seem to be related to the volume controls: MasterVolume,
Line, Wave, Midi, CD, Microphone, WaveTable, CyberSynth, but I don't
know why there are multiples sets, or why none is other than all
zeroes.  If you find out anything, could you please let me know??

The trouble with RegGenie is that one can only look at lines that one
finds, not the lines above or below. But by going to Regedit, I see
that there are also LeftLineInVol and RightLineInVol.  They are not
zero, but they are equal, and that's because I have all my balance
controls in the middle.  I suppose if I change the balance control, I
would have to close and reopen regedit to see signs of any change,
right????

It also says that Aux1_Src_Name is CD,
                 Aux2_Src_Name is Midi, and
                    3          is WaveTable.

I don't have Aux1Mute, but I have AuxMute. Maybe that is what I will
need to change (but now it is all 0's, as is LineMute).
It would be great if one could edit the registry from DOS, but since
their new baby, XP, doesn't have a native dos, it's going to be hard
to find someone to write a program that does this.  I think it would
be time-consuming anyhow.  So try changing it with regedit.

*** Why do I have
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\MEDIA\0001\Config\
where the numbers go up to 0025?   How many do you have??  Do I have
many because I had problems with the sound card and uninstalled and
reinstalled many times???

**This is a great program that will find every occurrence of a search
term, without your pressing F3 over and over.  I got it 5 or 8 years
ago with an early version of Cleansweep for win9x.
