W98SE, WM9, Task Manager and AutoShutdown

I have a W98SE machine with WM9 that I use to stream music from the
Internet.

The machine has a BIOS that turns it on every morning at the same time -
works great - wish more machines had this!

Problem is shutting down.

I use Task Manager to shut down W98, but it can't shut down WM9 - it always
hangs.

The shutdown command I am using is:
C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE[space]user.exe,exitwindows

and it always hangs with "Rundll not responding"

If WM9 is not running, it shuts down fine.  IF it is running it hangs.

So my questions to you are:
A. is this the best shut down command I can use?
B. Are there better ways to do this?

I am so close to having this automated, I can almost taste it!  But if it
doesn't shut down automatically, I waste a lot of power over the year.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Who wrote the BIOS?  I might like to get one.

Don't know.

Don't know.  (Isn't this the same question as above, just reversed?
You're not going to trick me into contradicting myself. :)  )

I use C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 1

The last number determines exactly what happens.
1 = total exit ("Ready to turn off computer")
2 = ??  Restart Windows?
3 = ??  Exit to Dos?
4 = ??  Standby?
5 = ??  Turn off computer????

Let us know what happens.

Somehow I think rundll.exe might be left over from windows 3.1.  Did
you use it then?

This is an old IBM Aptiva.  I have never seen it since - doesn't mean they
aren't out there, but it is the only place I have seen it.

Hint to manufacturers - we like this feature!

But you suggest a new one below!  Thanks.

I as actually asking if there are better ways e.g., trying to shut WM9 down
separately from Windows, or something else like that.

I will try the above and let you know.

No, this is a totally wiped machine, so it isn't leftover, unless like a lot
of W98 MS left it in there.

The command I got from some old publication - they probably reused it from
W31 - saved their researchers time ;-)

Thank you for your ideas - I will try them.

But I don't know if yours is the best or not. :)

I got this off some webpage, maybe a MS one.

I still have win3.1 in one of my partitions, and I just checked and
there is no rundll*.* in it at all.

OTOH, win98 FE has both of them with the same date/time.  May 11, '98,

You're welcome.
