HELP PLEASE- Sound suddenly vanished .....

please excuse my ignorance but for no apparent reason I have lost all sound.

Please can anybody offer any ideas to resolve ?

Did you check the speakers (got another computer to try them on?) and, if
powered separately, the power cord (is there juice in the plug receptacle)?
Did you look in Control Panel, System, Device Manager, Sounds... to see if
there is any indication of a problem?  How long has the problem been going
on and did you make any changes (hardware or software) just before the
problem started?  Have you rebooted since the problem started?
