98SE with only floppy disk to copy to - purchased XP with everything BUT a
floppy a week ago! Networked via Crossover CAT 5e, spent over an hour with an
expert at £1.50 per minute to get it working....great, only to find I
couldn't access the files! Phoned again to be told that yes, we do seem to
have a big problem with 98 and XP talking (why wasn't I told that at the
beginning of the first phone call!), the only other option was to physically
take out the old drive and place along side new.

Having fiddled about with it (this past week every spare minute)  I now get
"you might not have permission to use netwok resource".

Reading between the lines this seems to be a very common problem that
Microsoft have not yet cured. I am about to return this PC back from where it
came from, as I do not feel I can benefit from this WNDOWS xp MEDIA CENTER
EDITION if I cannot transfer my old files to this new PC without further cost
and effort.

Reading other posts on the same type of query: I did read somewhere? that 98
and XP (or others?) cannot read from C Drive, My Documents and somewhere
else, so that possibly leaves only desk top to share folders from.

With my New PC I had a net2plug which I tried and that didn't work either.
Do I need 2 adaptors to make this work?

Would appreciate any help in this matter...looking forward to receiving my
telephone bill along with my credit card bill!

There's no inherent problem in networking 98SE with XP.  All versions
of Windows can network with each other.  I don't agree with your
expert that it's necessary to take out the old drive and place it
along side the new one.  Someone who charges £1.50 per minute should
be able to get the network to work.

By default, XP doesn't allow networked access to the Program Files and
Windows folders and to individual users' folders within Documents and
Settings.  It allows access to all other disks and folders.

You can remove those sharing restrictions by disabling simple file
sharing on XP.  Even with those restrictions, you can share subfolders
within those folders, e.g. you can share "C:\Program Files\Outlook
Express" or "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Favorites" and access
that folder from another computer on the network.

The easiest way to get 98 and XP networked is to run XP's Network
Setup Wizard on both computers.  You can run the Wizard on 98 by
inserting the XP CD-ROM.  You can copy the Wizard from XP to a CD-ROM
or a thumb drive -- it's in the file C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe.
