Dell 2200 w/ XP home and gateway win98 machine connected by ethernet.
Ran xp network connection wizard on XP and WIN98 machines. The XP
machine gives me a icon in the systray with and ! that says:  "Status.
Limited or no connectivity". When I click on the icon and click Support
it says:" Connection Status.  Limited or no Connectivity.  You might not
be able to acces the internet or some network resources. The problem
occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the
computer." I clicked Repair, but that failed, saying "Windows could not
finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be
completed: Renewing your IP address".

On the XP, I tried ipconfig /release and got display, but when I tried
ipconfig /renew , nothing happened.
On the Win98 I tried winipcfg release and nothing happens. Click renew
and it hangs and I have to exit with ctl-alt-del end task.
I have internet connections indepently on each machine. The pc's
apparently can't see each other.
Any suggestions on how to renew the ip address, either automatically or
via manual input?
Or whatever it will take to complete this network.
Thank you.

Windows XP networking problems should be asked in a Windows XP network
newsgroup.  There, for example, they could tell you that the "Limited or no
connectivity" message means that your computer is not picking up an IP
address from a router or DHCP server on your network and help you discover
why.  :-)
