Some months ago, an IT guy linked up my Windows 98PC with my 'xp home'
pc, so that a sub-directory 'share'on windows xp could be read/written
to by both.
It worked great.
the network required me to enter a password in my 98 pc about once
every 28 days - but I don't know where/how this was verified on the xp
pc.
On XP I logon with a username and no password.
After trying installing a router -which links 98 and xp - I have
screwed up this connection - I can't even resurrect it by removing the
router.
By trying various options on the windows xp wizard, the best I have
achieved is XP can see 98 pc shared files
but when trying to see XP shared files from 98 PC I get the password
prompting for \\XP_NAME\IPC$.
This issue seems common on forums such as this, with resolution to be
to set up a user / password on xp same as 98 pc.
However I don't have a user name for the 98 pc and don't wish to create
a new one as it didn't need it before..
I have tried numerous permutations of the xp network wizard, but can't
crack this nut.
I have tried setting up a password on the XP guest, but this doesn't
enable either.

On the 98 machine, click on start ->settings -> control panel ->
network and change the primary logon to windows logon. Then log off
and log on as (say) "user1" and use a blank password. The next time
you log on you won't be asked for a password. Then, as you already
know, you need to create an account called user1 on the xp box.
If, when you reboot, your 98 box is still not automatically logging on
as user1, then you need to edit the registry as follows :-
Delete the autologon value in
HKLM/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion/network/realmodenet

The IPC$ prompt is Win98SE's cryptic way of telling you that Win XP
computer denied networked access because it didn't recognize the user
who requested it.
If the XP computer runs Windows XP Home Edition:
1. Enable networked access by typing this command in the Start | Run
box on XP:
net user guest /active:yes
2. Remove the network password from the Guest account on XP:
a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK:
c. Click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password.
e. Click OK without entering a new password.
If the XP computer runs Windows XP Professional:
1. Determine whether simple file sharing is enabled or disabled:
a. In My Computer, click Tools | Folder Options | View.
b. Scroll to the end of the list of advanced settings and look
the box labeled "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)".
2. If simple file sharing is enabled, follow the two steps listed
above for Windows XP Home Edition.
3. If simple file sharing is disabled:
a. Create a logon password for the user account on XP.
b. Log onto Windows 98 using the same user name and password.
