Hi

I have just set up a wireles router ( belkin ) on my XP desktop and have a
usb Balkin wireless network adapter on an Win98 laptop

I can surf on my laptop fine via the router , but cannot seem to share files
either way

I did try to use the network set up wizard but abandoned the idea when the
system asked for a floppy disk because
a) I did not have a disk to hand
b) I did not want to upset my LAN I had working okay with the shared
broadband connection

Should I try setting up the network again using a disk as above ( and can I
be confident that if it goes wrong I will not muck up what I already have
working )

or have I missed something simple on each machine

in addition to the wireless router the desktop does also have its own
wireless adapter

can anyone please help

very much appreciate any assistance

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers.  It will keep the
Internet connection working, and it will make the right settings for
file and printer sharing.

If the Wizard detects the router's shared Internet connection, tell it
to use that connection.  Otherwise, tell it that the computers connect
to the Internet through a residential gateway.

If you don't want to use a floppy disk, you can copy this file from
the XP computer to a CD or USB flash drive and run it on Win98:

  C:\Windows\System32\Netsetup.exe

If you've installed a firewall program, configure it to allow access
on the local area network.

Thanks for the suggestions

I tried what you said , but still have problems

I also had quite an ordeal in the process

After running the set up on the XP machine I had a number of options
somethink like

Use the XP CD - something which in this country ( GB ) is hardly ever
shipped with the PC

do Nothing  which is obviouls no help

or save to disk

I tried the last option and was only given a list of my card readers

I saveit it to one of them ( very odd move by only option ) and transferred
it to C drive

It would be a hassel to connect up a floppy to my lap top so I tried
emailing it which failled due to security settings

so I plonked it on my webspace and dowloded it onto my laptop

Success I though

Shut down Laptop as instructed

When the laptop restarted it said could not complete as it could not find
the network driver  this may be baecause teh network device is plug in and
play

Prehaps I should give up and wait till I can afford a more upto date laptop

Oh and also I had to do a SDRS on the XP box which just hung while
restarting , ended up doing a cold reboot which resolved problem

what a SAGA !!

I am sure I am missing something very simple

cheers

I forgot to mention

I can ping each machine which suggests to me there is some networking going
on

just not the file sharing kind
