In control panel | networks........
ADD a Client, such as Client for Microsoft Networks.
In the identification tab give your workgroup a shared name,
and identify each computer uniquely (just so you know you
are connect). For Access Control, check the top choice, it
requires no additional set up.
In Properties for Client for MS Networks, choose Quick Logon
(my preference).
ADD an adapter=to your NIC.
ADD a protocol. Microsoft | TCP/IP
In Properties for the TCP/IP protocol bound to your NIC,
Obtain IP Address Automatically (DHCP). For WINS, Gateway
and DNS tabs "disable" and leave blank.
ADD a service=File and Printer sharing.
In properties for File and Printer sharing, set both
machines to Browse Master Automatic (if you run more than
two machines my advice is to set one browse master to
ENABLED and the other two to DISABLED with the enabled
machine always on).
LM Announce =NO
For File and Printing sharing in the box in the middle of
networks main dialog window, (left click) choose what you
want to share (i.e. let the other machine access).
REMOVE NetBEUI and IPX protocols if installed.
Does this help?

This response sounds closest to what may be my answer.
I just set up a Belkin wireless router. I hard-wired my XP machine and have
a Belkin PC adapter for my 98SE machine. The Internet connex thru the router
is fine but I hit trouble trying to set up File and Printer Sharing. The XP
machine does not have a floppy so I was not able to use the Create Network
Setup Disk option. It said I could use the XP CD to do the setup but when I
tried it I got an error for the winxpchk application - "Performed illegal op
and must shut down..."
I tried grabbing all the latest updates to 98SE but still no luck that route.
So I guess my question is - will the steps outlined here work in my case?
TIA,
Steve
