Have an old win 98 (non SE) machine I want to add to my home network with an
XP machine.  Was trying to do wireless simply because of the necessity to
climb into attic and string lan wires.  I have an WIN-SE CD, and was
thinking of 'upgrading' the beast, however it is an OEM E machine that has
not given me any trouble over the last 5 years of service and would rather
not upset the current config.  I can't remember if an upgrade destroys all
data or not??    TIA.

I use cat5 but have a 95 laptop, six 98se pc's and an xp pc all living
happily sharing files and printers. In fact the laptop is set as Broswe
Master. Couple even use a 3rd party proxy server running on a 98SE box to
connect as I'm dialup. Proxy works regardless if it's 95/98se or xp pc using
it. Mind you, I run Netbuie on all for the F&P sharing, tcp-ip for proxy,
testing servers, streaming media etc. also on all of them and ipx/spx on a
couple for older games doing multi-player and won't use any other protocol.

An upgrade from original Win98 to Win98SE shouldn't destroy data.
However, it's prudent to back up your data before making any
significant change to a computer, in case of unexpected problems.

Both original Win98 and Win98SE can network with XP.  However, it's
hard to find wireless networking equipment that works with either
original Win98 or Win98SE.

Here's an alternative: don't upgrade, and get a wireless-to-Ethernet
bridge, which can connect to a wired Ethernet adapter on any computer:

Thanks Steve....I will try to install a network card first and run a long
ethernet cable to see if I can get it to work. I am hoping it will, and if
so will consider one of the bridges.  Most wireless network devices that I
have looked at, have windows 98SE as a minimum and that was the reason for
the post.  I already bought two PCI cards and have 14 days to return them.
