What type of "direct cable connection" is it?
With an Ethernet connection, you can enable Internet Connection
Sharing on the XP computer to give Internet access to the Win98
computer.
I don't know if it's possible with a serial or parallel connection.

It was a serial direct cable connection :)
I finally succeeded! I created a direct serial cable VPN connection.
Thanks to it I cold be on the same network as the pc and the router and
could access it to browse the web :)
