I don't think there's a maximum number of switches, since they're
store-and-forward. My recollection is that the limit on hubs is
five levels. Frankly, I try to keep switches within that limit,
too, since you're going to have some latency associated with each,
which can affect performance. Besides, 5 levels allows a LOT of
devices (enough to overflow the tables in the switches, which is
another issue, BTW).
But I could be wrong -- I haven't studied it closely.
