Hi there, I have a problem and i hope someone can help.
I am sharing a house and we have recently acquired an Internet connection,
with Telewest Broadband, a British ISP owned by Warner Bros i think. Anyway,
I have Windows XP and have used the information provided by them to set up a
working internet connection on my desktop PC. However i need to connect an
old laptop running win 98 to my network, but i can't. Both computers are
connected to a hub with the right ethernet cables and the hub goes to my
internet connection. I have no trouble getting online, but can't even manage
to network the computers together, let alone get the laptop to receive the
internet.
I have tried using the software provided by telewest on the win98 comp, but
its only supposed to be used on win xp comps, and everything was fine until
it tried to contact Telewest where it said that it couldn't connect. I rang
them up and they said that i might be able to just plug the comp in if i use
ethernet connections, but i just can't get it to work. The NIC is installed
properly i think and it says that it is working in device manager, but i
think maybe it might be broke if it can't pick up anything? I think my
settings are correct and i have the correctly gateway listed on the laptop,
but an ipconfig brings up 169.254.27.59 meaning that its not connecting
correctly (i think thats what it means). Thanks for your time, i dont really
know that much about networking so any help would be greatly appreciated.

your router is not giving an IP to the laptop , make sure DHCP in enabled on
the laptop
