So lets get this straight. You have created additional users on your PC but
the User wizard does not show them?
When you check Profiles in Windows Explorer, are the other uses shown?
When you check Profiles in the Registry, are the other users shown there as
well?
I have read conflicting information re the Administrator for 98 and 98SE.
The Resource Kit says the first person to log on after a Windows install
automatically becomes the Administrator and this will be shown in the Users
Wizard. I can verify that this does not happen. Another piece of information
says that everyone has the same privileges unless the Policy Editor has been
run to allocate otherwise.

Hi Alan,

Yes - I think. Let me say this... I've never added any users via Control
Panel/Users, and attempting to do this just brings up the wizard. However,
what I did do was keep adding new login user names and passwords using the
login screen that is presented after choosing Client For Microsoft Networks
as my primary network logon. Each of these does seem to have a unique
profile, for instance the "quick type" drop down list on web entry forms is
different for each user.

Im showing my ignorance, but I dont know how to do that
> When you check Profiles in the Registry, are the other users shown there as

under HKEY_USERS all I have is .DEFAULT and Software
under HKEY_CURRENT_USER / Network / Recent I have the name of the XP machine
shared folder with the current Win98 login ID
Not sure that I'm looking in the right place though.
I'm going to install Poledit to see what that can tell me - never used it
before.
To tell you the truth I dont know much about the networking side of win98.
Something I need to get to grips with.
Thanks for input,
Keith

First things first, when you do a search for .pwl files using the FIND
facility, does the result give you all the users that you have created?
To check profiles in Windows Explorer, go to Windows\Profiles. There you
should see a list of all the profiles that have been generated.
Regarding the Registry, when you look in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Profile List, you should see
an identical list of users. Basically, I believe Explorer and the Registry
should have identical settings.
I would use the Policy Editor as a last resort - but that is just me! On my
system I have Microsoft Family login setup so that multiple users can use
the same PC but all have there own unique settings for Desktop\Start-up etc.
When activated the logon screen gives a list of all the valid users for the
PC. You may want to do this to check what the system thinks it has setup.
However, I don't know if you can swap between Client for MS Networks and
Family login without causing further problems!

yes.

checked c:\Windows and there is no sub-folder called Profiles

Checked all registry hives (mine start HKEY_...) and I dont have ProfileList
thanks for the suggestions though.
To get to the bottom of this I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get
into win98 / xp networking properly - like buy a book :) .
This is an annoyance more than anything because it just means that I've got
several network id's hanging about on my system. Not the end of the world I
guess.
thanks again,
Keith
