I have a basic LAN set up (crossover cable) and I am
wondering if I can remotely control the other computer.
By that I mean if I run a executable on the remote machine
I assume it would actuallly run on the local machine (not
sure of this though as so far I have only copied files).
For example could I burn CD's on the remote machine.
I am a bit of a novice at networking :O)

You could use one of the "VNC" versions such as RealVNC.  It is
basically a terminal services software set.
