I have OE5.  I have a file of several hundred email
messages from someone that I wanted to be certain and
save.  I tried the methods I read in OE Help and they
didn't work for me.  I moved this file to My Documents in
Windows and also to a zip disc.  But it is in format .dbx
and I cannot read the messages.  I tried to move it back
to OE but can't do it.  Any suggestions or have I messed
things up for good?   Thanks in advance.

You have not message up things for good.  Your messages are recoverable.  But you can't
just move a file into the OE folder and have OE recognize it.

Backing Up, Recovering and Restoring Outlook Express versions 5 & 6 Files and Settings

The end of the first article above explains how to get a single DBX file  back into OE

Or you can use the following program to convert the DBX file to EML files (one per
message).
DBXtract - http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
EML files can be read directly by OE.
