With regards to the location, do I understand it correctly. That is,
even if one munges an address, the recipient of an email can always
identify who sent it ?

Unless one is proficient at "spoofing" IP addresses, which would imply a
level of awareness of how the system works to a much greater degree than
average. Changing or "munging" email addresses only prevents people from
mailing to a known address; it does nothing to hide the IP address of the
sender. And armed with that info (and is some cases a court order) the
identity is a simple thing to find out. Your activity is recorded by your
ISP in date time logs (which is why they usually require a court order to
allow law enforcement to see them).
It's sort of like the neighborhoods where I grew up a long time ago, when if
I or any other youngsters in the neighborhood did anything "out of line," we
could be assured that our Mom and Dad would know about it before we ever got
home. It's just now that "Big Brother" is watching vs. that "nosy Mrs.
O'Malley" down the street. <G>
