Michael,

If you installed Windows XP on the hard disk drive on which you had Window98
there's no need to worry about how to get files back because they are not
there any more.  It might be stating the obvious and I hope you haven't done
that but it needs to be said - just in case.

If, however, you have installed Windows XP onto another hard disk it is a
relatively simple matter to re-install your old hard disk (remember to make
sure that you set your CD ROMS and hard drives so that you don't have more
than one master and one slave on each chain).  You can then use Windows
Explorer to drag your files from the old hard disk to the new hard disk.

Hi Bill,

I beg to differ.  The OE files are usually still there after an XP upgrade,
but OE loses the source of them when it sets itself up sometimes.  Usually
one can search and find the old directory of dbx files and then use File |
Import to get them into OE.

If he reformatted and did a clean install, then the messages are likely
gone, although DBXpress might get some of them anyway.

cheers,

steve

Steve,

Point accepted.  To  "common or garden" users deleting a file is as good as
loosing it forever whilst at the other extreme it is possible to lift files
from a disk that has been formatted and even one which has been cooked in a
fire (if you are prepared to pay several hundred pounds).  Perhaps I was
over simplifying the situation.

DBXpress only costs $24.95 and it is specifically designed to pull messages
off disk clusters themselves and bypass the file system.

But my point was, that if the drive has not been formatted, the old dbx
files are probably still there.

cheers,

steve
