Some of the problems/answers on this forum should have solved my problem, but
they did not. I automatically upgraded from OE5 to OE6 when upgrading from
IE5 to IE6 on the 2004 TurboTax disk. I was told that the saved messages,
address book, et al would transfer to OE6 automatically, but nto be safe I
tried to back up this data. I followed the OLEXA directions as far as I
could, but when I got to the CTRL+C copy command nothing happened. I
continued to the next steps until I got to the CTRL+V command and again
nothing happened. I therefore tried to save the various folders to the
Desktop. I now have a series of pages with the MS "E" in the middle for
Folders, Outbox, Inbox, etc. on the Desktop. After doing the OE6 install, and
after the restart, all my saved messages were available in OE6 so it appeared
I had wasted my time doing a back up. Upon restart the next day, all the
messages and my settings were gone and I cannot find a way to get them back,
including transferring the Desktop icons to OE in Windows Explorer. Where did
I screw up and is there any hope of getting my messages back? If so, How?

First, determine the location of your present message store folder in
Outlook Express v.6.  Do this by opening the program and click on
Tools/Options/Maintenance and then the Store Folder button.  Write down the
location of the folder.

Now do a file search for all files ending with the extension of DBX.  Any
you find in another folder that is not your present default store folder are
most likely the missing messages.  Again, open Outlook Express and use the
menu, File/Import/Messages, selecting OE6 type and From a Message Store and
point to the folder where you found the likely missing DBX files.

WE got a partial success. 22 messages from 1999 were retrieved, but that was
all. Should I assume that the rest are lost? What I don't understand is why
the messages were present after the install, but the next boot they were gone.

The folders may have been corrupted.  You might consider downloading a copy
of DBXtract ($5) from www.oehelp.com and use it on those DBX files that did
not import successfully.  Also check the sizes of the DBX files that did not
import.  A size of 57KB or less most likely is an indication of an empty DBX
file.  Good luck.
